Middle School (Grades 6-8)
We are happy to arrange an after school program for middle school students (grades 6-8) if we have a minimum number of interested students to form a class. We welcome beginners as well as experienced learners, including those raised with Spanish in the household.
Curriculum
This program is for children who have been in our program for four years and seek to continue beyond elementary school as well as for children who attended a dual immersion elementary school and want to maintain proficiency in Spanish throughout the middle school years.
This program also welcomes beginners: 12-14 year old children who want to start learning Spanish or want to take more advanced classes than the ones that may be offered by our local middle schools.
In addition to teaching the language, our program seeks to expose middle school children to social, historical and environmental studies and artistic content on the Spanish-speaking world not typically offered at school. We work in partnership with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies on campus, whose mission is also to enhance and promote cultural knowledge of Latin America in K-12 education.
Class Schedule
Class levels will be further organized into one or two classes per time period by the end of the first week of classes. The groups are based on the number of students enrolled, the children’s ages, and their previous knowledge of the language. The schedule will be decided with the teacher.
If you are interested in arranging classes for your child please contact languageacademy@illinois.edu.
Classes for this age group will only be held if a minimum of 10 students register.
